Our 21st On the Couch series features Rodd Staples, Secretary, Transport for NSW.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

Stewards of the Sector is a series of informal interviews with key leaders of the public sector. Hosted by former ABC journalist, Monica Attard, these interviews explore the person behind the role, their influences and priorities, and their insights into the future of the public sector.

Our special guest for this event is Rodd Staples, Secretary, Transport for NSW.  As the Secretary of Transport for NSW, Rodd Staples leads more than 25,000 people across the Transport cluster to plan, manage and deliver transport infrastructure and services for all transport modes.  Transport for NSW is currently delivering the largest transport infrastructure program this nation has ever seen - $51.2 billion of investment for game-changing projects like Sydney Metro and Sydney Light Rail that will shape our cities, centres and communities for generations to come.

Previous On the Couch interviewees have included Margaret Crawford (Auditor-General of New South Wales), Glenn King (Secretary, Customer Service Cluster) Emma Hogan (Public Service Commissioner), Damon Rees (Chief Executive Officer, Service NSW), Sonja Stewart (Deputy Secretary, Department of Premier and Cabinet), Tim Reardon (Secretary of Transport for NSW), Jeannine Biviano (Deputy Secretary, Government and Corporate Services of Department of Finance, Services and Innovation), Mark Scott (Secretary NSW Department of Education) and Elizabeth Koff (Secretary of NSW Health).

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

Customers are at the centre of everything that Transport do including transport planning, strategy, policy, procurement and other non-service delivery functions across all modes of transport - roads, rail, ferries, light rail and point to point.

This is an opportunity to hear first-hand about Rodd's leadership style and aspirations in an informal interview conducted by an award-winning journalist. The interview concludes with a brief Q&A session with questions from the audience.

SPEAKER

Rodd Staples
Secretary
Transport for NSW

As Secretary of Transport for NSW, Rodd Staples leads the Transport cluster which has more than 25,000 people working across the transport agencies on behalf of the NSW community. He is responsible for leading the Transport cluster to deliver Premier’s and State priorities, and his role covers the planning and delivery of services and infrastructure across the transport system including trains, buses, ferries, roads and traffic, freight and ports, light rail, point to point transport, intrastate air services, and active travel. Rodd is accountable for delivering the largest transport infrastructure pipeline in a generation, which includes $43bn of capital works over a four year period.

He’s also accountable for better integration across transport services, implementing technology and innovation to improve customer service, and driving reforms and long term planning to make the transport system more customer-focused and efficient.

In his previous role as Program Director, Sydney Metro Delivery Office, Rodd was leading the delivery of Sydney Metro – Australia’s biggest public transport projects, with 31 stations and 66km of new metro rail.

An engineer who grew up in Sydney’s south, Rodd has also worked in the fields of transport and infrastructure planning for nearly two decades, across Australia and in both public and private sectors.

His qualifications in engineering and finance provide the strong foundations required to deliver an unprecedented program of infrastructure works and service improvements across transport in NSW.

He lives in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire with his wife Maree and their three children Thomas, Anna and Jack.

FACILITATOR

Monica Attard

Monica spent 28 years at the ABC working across radio and television. She was the ABC’s Russia correspondent at possibly the best time in modern history to be a Russian correspondent. She reported on the coup against Mikhail Gorbachev, the collapse of Soviet communism, the rise of Boris Yeltsin and his peculiar brand of capitalism and democracy, the first Chechen war and she covered civil wars across the old Soviet Union. Four years of covering the revolution left her with just enough energy to pump out a book about the events. Monica is now working with CNN International and The Hoopla, a women’s website, based in Sydney.
