ABOUT THIS EVENT

IPAA NSW occupies a privileged position working with leaders across the NSW public sector. Our Secretary Valedictory series is an opportunity for departing Secretaries to provide their reflections and comments in a public address.

Andrew Cappie-Wood's remarkable career in the public service spans more than 40 years. His contributions to improving community safety through his stewardship of the NSW Department of Justice will be felt for years to come. Before becoming Secretary of the Department of Justice, Andrew was head of the ACT Public Service. In NSW, he previously led the Department of Housing, the Department of Education and Training, and the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, as well as working in a range of positions in the Department of Planning.

Andrew is a former IPAA NSW President and was bestowed with a National Fellow in 2004 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the study and practice of public administration.

In his IPAA Secretary Valedictory address, Andrew will share his experiences and insights in areas of key interest to current and aspiring public sector leaders.  His address will range from observations on what changed in both the public sector and the political class to the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

Andrew’s Valedictory address will take place in the Anzac Memorial Centenary Extension’s new auditorium.  The Anzac Memorial stands proudly as one of the state’s most significant cultural and commemorative institutions.  The Centenary Extension was opened by the Duke of Sussex in October 2018 and provides new exhibition and education spaces. The central, symbolic Hall of Service, named in acknowledgement of the original Memorial's halls, recognises the service of Australian Defence personnel. Andrew played a significant role in championing this project during his tenure as Secretary of the Department of Justice.

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

The Secretary Valedictory provides you with an excellent opportunity to hear from one of NSW public sector’s leaders about issues of strategic importance to the State.

Attending this event will build your understanding the unique responsibilities of the public sector and support you in learning more about the ideas that underpin and reshape public administration.

At least 25% of this event is allocated to questions from the floor, meaning that you will have the opportunity to play an active part in this discussion.

The Centenary Extension includes the new Hall of Service as well as exhibition galleries.  We encourage you to arrive before the event to spend time exploring the Anzac Memorial Collection as well as this new civic space.

SPEAKERS

Andrew Cappie-Wood
Former Secretary of NSW Department of Justice

Andrew has over 24 years’ experience in leading State/Territory government agencies. In that time, Andrew lead the NSW Departments of Justice, Education as well as Ageing, Disability & Home Care. In addition he has been head of the ACT Public Service and Chief Minister’s Department and spent time in the Departments of Planning, Aboriginal Affairs and Property Services.

Whilst qualified as an urban planner, his experience at managing and controlling complex systems and organisations has resulted in a broad skill base across many differing legislative, business and organisational settings. Andrew’s many roles would best categorise him as an agile generalist with peripatetic tendencies.

Andrew has chaired numerous Boards and committees including Ministerial companies, Development Corporations, Advisory Boards and a variety of statutory and non-statutory committees. He has had the honour of previously being the NSW President of the Institute of Public Administration for over 5 years.

Before joining the public sector, Martin had a lengthy private sector career primarily in digital media and technology after an early career in consulting and banking in Australia and Hong Kong.

Martin holds an MBA (Hons) from the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland, Master of Applied Finance (Macquarie), and Bachelor of Economics (Sydney). He completed the Executive Fellows program at the Australia New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) in 2009, and was awarded the James Wolfensohn Public Service Scholarship to study at the Harvard Kennedy School in 2013.
