Effective Writing Skills

Do you want to achieve clarity, impact and influence with your writing?

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Your writing reflects how clearly you think and how simply, informatively, and persuasively you can transmit your message.

To write effectively and for your writing to achieve its purposes, you need to adopt a few simple strategies and follow a number of plain, easily understood principles.

Doing this enables you to master the skills of effective writing and empowers you to create clear, concise, and convincing professional writing.

Effective communications skills were identified by the NSW public sector leaders as one of the Skills for Success which all public servants now need. This course builds on the foundations developed in Skills for Success: Communicating with confidence.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In this fast-moving, interactive yet informal workshop you will learn how to develop your skills as an effective writer.

You will be engaged throughout the day in more than a dozen interactive writing exercises designed to develop your skills and confidence.

You will end the day by working (privately) on a substantial piece of your own professional writing.

You will also take away a 40-page workbook which contains all the simple writing principles and techniques covered in the course.

You will finish this course knowing you can:

  • write shorter, clearer, more precise and reader-friendly reports, policy documents, manuals, memos and emails.
  • prepare and structure your writing in the order that best goes to its purpose.
  • write simple, effective and informative sentences that impart clear information or powerfully persuade.
  • edit out unnecessary words and phrases to achieve greater concision, clarity and impact in their writing.
  • target your writing to specific readerships.
  • know how to structure, revise and rewrite quickly and competently.

Course Facilitator

John Harman

John Harman has written for a living all his working life: first in advertising, and then, for many years, as a journalist in the UK and America, finishing up on London’s famous Fleet Street. Later, he became the co-owner of a small film production company where he wrote countless documentary, training and corporate film scripts. During that time he also began scriptwriting for UK television and wrote episodes for popular UK television series.

Over the past few years John has been commissioned by major publishers to ghost-write many popular books. These are generally, the life stories of well-known people but he has also ghost-written popular romantic fiction and corporate histories along with biographies and autobiographies. One of John’s books, commissioned and published by Penguin Books, is Arthur’s War, a true story of incredible courage.

John conducts many workshops and seminars on creative writing, as well as being asked by government departments, major NGOs and some of our largest commercial companies to teach executives how to write simply and well.
