Democracy Under Pressure, Elections, Institutions and the Future of Public Administration in Australia

Is this event for you?

Join us and your peers to hear from Australia's most respected election analyst, Antony Green, for a timely and thought-provoking exploration of democracy, institutions and public trust.

Drawing on his four decades of experience observing Australian elections, Antony will examine how Australian democracy has evolved, the growing pressures facing electoral administration, and what public institutions must do to preserve trust and stability in the decades ahead.

Antony will explore why Australia's democratic system remains more resilient than many assume, and how strong institutions, professional public administration and a deep respect for the rule of law continue to safeguard stability, even in times of uncertainty.

You will gain insight into the growing complexity of electoral administration, the challenges technology presents for election integrity, and the delicate balance between efficiency, transparency and public confidence.

Most importantly, the 2026 SPANN Oration will challenge you to consider the vital but often unseen role you, as a public servant, play in protecting democratic legitimacy. Because while governments may change, institutions endure, and their strength depends on the people entrusted to uphold them..
