Effective Writing Skills

How to write effectively, even if you don’t like writing.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Are you new to the workforce or new to the public sector?

Are you looking to develop your writing skills but don’t want to get bogged down in theory and academia?

Professional writing is essential for any information worker in today’s workplace, regardless of your specialisation. Writing effectively is a craft that can be taught, and in this course you will learn the techniques of the craft even if you find writing a chore.

This course is not to be missed for anyone looking to build their confidence writing in the public sector.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

You will leave this course with the skills to write in clear, concise, reader-friendly English.

You will learn how to analyse and improve your own writing with plenty of opportunities to practice and receive feedback.

You will finish this course knowing you can:

  • identify the three essential strategies of executive writing.
  • work through the seven principles that infuse all writing with clarity and concision.
  • identify what’s the point? – determining the precise purpose of any piece of writing.
  • identify who cares? – identifying readers.
  • learn how to write to different target readerships.
  • decide the most effective order of the writing to achieve purpose.
  • know the difference between writing to inform and writing to influence or persuade.
  • write for readers outside the agency: turning jargon into common parlance.
  • examine twenty-two common areas of poor writing: from grammar and vocabulary to tone, style and proof-reading.
  • learn how to précis: turning long documents into short ones.
  • make the writing muscular: finding and eradicating the hidden 20% of fat in most writing: the soft, abstract noun phrases; soggy adjectives adverbs; overuse of the passive.

NSW Public Sector Commission Capability Framework

Effective Writing Skills is for people at the Foundational to Advanced levels and you will develop the following capabilities:
